Performance W1145 - Customer Reviews

  1. Worked Great For My Situation
    Review by RHE
    Rating:
      (5 of 5)

The fuel pump on my wife's 1999 GMC Jimmy failed the other day. Murphy's Law held true once again...she had just filled the gas tank. I didn't want to try replacing the pump with 18 gallons of gas in the tank...that's around 120 pounds to try and maneuver while lying on my back. So I needed a way to empty the tank. After doing some online research I found that the two cheapest options were probably siphon pumps and hand-operated transfer pumps.

I didn't think the cheaper siphon pump option would work for my needs. The inlet hose was very short and didn't appear very flexible. I needed a long, flexible inlet hose to get into the gas tank. In addition, I was concerned that there would not be enough height differential between the Jimmy tank and my gas can for siphoning to work effectively and I didn't want to spend all night squeezing that little rubber bulb trying to pump it out.

This particular transfer pump (Wilmar/Performance Tool W1145) has received some bad reviews online, but I decided to give it a shot as it was one of the cheapest and the only one I was able to find in the local store. I figured if it didn't work well, then I would order a more expensive one online. I'm sure glad I bought it as it worked better than I expected.

I assembled the pump per the "siphoning" instructions (attach a red hose to each end of the pump). The red hoses are each about 4 feet in length and the upper hose (near the pump handle) is the inlet. The lower hose is the outlet and the other (black) hoses are not used in this application. I tried sticking the inlet hose down the gas tank filler pipe with no luck. It was not long enough. I just happened to have some spare hose laying around the garage, so I replaced the inlet hose with a longer one (about 8 feet). I tried again and this time the hose just got caught in one of the many turns in the filler pipe. Grrr...frustrating...

Next I crawled under the Jimmy to look at the filler pipe connections to the gas tank. There are 2 sections of rigid metal pipe and 2 sections of flexible rubber pipe secured with hose clamps. I decided to take off the rubber section connected directly to the gas tank. Removing the spare tire before starting makes this much easier. I loosened the hose clamps and used 2 pry bars (screwdrivers would work too but not as well) to disconnect the upper end of the rubber pipe from the rigid metal pipe. Now disconnecting the lower end of the rubber pipe from the gas tank was easy. All told, assembling the transfer pump and disassembling the Jimmy filler pipe took about an hour.

I re-assembled the transfer pump with the original inlet hose and stuck it into the tank. I put the outlet hose into my gas can and started pumping. It was working! I filled the gas can and since my Grand Am needed a fill on gas I moved the outlet hose to the filler pipe on my car and filled it too. All told, it took about 30 minutes to transfer 18 gallons of gas.

I didn't experience any of the problems that other reviewers did. Suction was sufficient. The hoses stayed connected. There were no significant leaks. I would recommend wearing gloves as my hands did get a bit of gas on them from operating the pump handle. The area around the pump piston leaks just a little bit. Also, have proper ventilation so the fumes don't get to you. You do have to pump this quite a bit (probably 30-40 strokes per gallon of gas transferred), but I was prepared to do that before I bought it. It's not like it's hard to pump...makes for a good little forearm workout.

For the price, this is a good product. It met my needs and saved me from having to buy a more expensive transfer pump. I hope I'll never need it again for this particular purpose, but I'm sure I will use it for something else in the future. Don't be scared off by one bad review. I'm a satisfied owner of this product.
